When you hear the word “ambition,” what immediately comes to mind? Some think of a person who is self-motivated and resilient. Others think of those who they know to be responsible and action oriented. But what about spiritual ambition? How does ambition translate into our spiritual lives? Spiritual ambition is similar but is founded in our motivation. When we think of spiritual ambition, we must ensure that our hearts are in line with God and His will for our lives.
Think for a moment about the heroes of our faith. In the Old Testament, we think of Moses, Joshua, kings, and prophets who followed God’s Word unwaveringly. In the New Testament, we see Jesus, the apostles, and many others do the same. Each of these individuals are examples of spiritual ambition with the proper motivation – a heart right with God.
Look at Paul as he encouraged the church at Philippi. He urged them, by being an example, to keep moving forward toward their purpose in Christ by saying, “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own…” (Philippians 3:12). Paul’s motivation to keep moving forward was not grounded in his business plan, vision board, or the many things on his “to do” list. His spiritual ambition was motivated by the intimate, relationship he had with His Lord and Savior. Paul understood that he had been “purchased with a price” and the price that was paid to spare his life from damnation was all the motivation he needed. Paul was not looking for recognition and accolades, but rather to spread the truth of Jesus Christ.
As you continue to GET CLOSER to God, my prayer is that your ambition would be spiritually motivated and rooted in the things of Christ Jesus.
