S.O.A.P. is the devotional method that we practice at TWC. It stands for Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer. It is a way of getting more out of your time in God's Word. We did not invent it — we just decided to make it available to you.
"Following this daily devotional will radically touch your heart and bring you closer to God than ever before. Just like physical soap, this devotional method will wash you spiritually and transform your heart. This is the devotional method that I have practiced for years — taught to me by my mentor.
Before you begin, gather these four simple essentials for your daily quiet time with God.
Set an appointment with God and keep it every day. Consistency is the key to transformation.
Find a great place — your kitchen, a coffee shop, anywhere comfortable and quiet for you.
Get a version that is easy to read and understand. Our favorite versions are the NIV, Message, NLT, NKJV, and Amplified.
Grab a great journal to write in. Recording your thoughts helps you track how God is speaking to you over time.
When you have your daily quiet time, read the scriptures that correlate with the month and day. In your journal, focus on these four distinct areas.
Write the verse or verses that spoke to you during your reading. Let the Holy Spirit highlight specific words or phrases that resonate with your heart.
Write down what the context of the scripture is. What is happening? Who is it happening to? Why is it happening? This is your general observation of what is taking place in the verse or verses.
How does the scripture and observation apply to what is happening to you or in your environment currently? This is where you write down what the verse or verses mean to you — what you hear God saying to you through the Scriptures.
Write a prayer to God based on what you just learned and ask Him to help you apply this truth in your life. This is your personal response to what God has spoken to you.
That's It!
Make this a daily habit and you will begin to grow in your relationship with God.
